From Parent to Advocate and Leader

In this Parent Spotlight, we share the story of Karen Vicente, a mother of two and parent leader at St. Anne’s Family Services.

Karen first joined AP-OD to better understand her children’s development and become the parent they needed at every stage of life. Through the program, she discovered the importance of play, learned to embrace each child’s unique way of learning, and gained the confidence to become a strong advocate for her family.

Inspired by her experience, Karen stepped into leadership roles within her community, serving on parent committees, advocating for early childhood programs, and encouraging other families to find their voices.

Today, Karen continues to support parents, strengthen her community, and demonstrate how investing in parents creates lasting change for children, families, and future generations.

De Madre a Defensora y Líder

En este Destacado para Padres, compartimos la historia de Karen Vicente, madre de dos hijos y líder de padres en St. Anne’s Family Services.

Karen llegó a AP-OD con el deseo de comprender mejor el desarrollo de sus hijos y convertirse en la madre que ellos necesitaban en cada etapa de sus vidas. A través del programa, descubrió la importancia del juego, aprendió a valorar la forma única en que cada niño aprende y adquirió la confianza para convertirse en una defensora de su familia.

Inspirada por su experiencia, Karen asumió roles de liderazgo en su comunidad, participando en comités de padres, promoviendo programas de educación en la primera infancia y animando a otras familias a hacer escuchar su voz.

Hoy, Karen continúa apoyando a otras familias, fortaleciendo a su comunidad y demostrando que invertir en los padres genera un impacto duradero en los niños, las familias y las futuras generaciones.

Ninguna familia debería tener que enfrentar la incertidumbre por sí sola. Mantenerse informada, contar con el apoyo de la comunidad y saber a dónde acudir en busca de ayuda son algunas de las formas más poderosas en que las familias desarrollan juntas su fortaleza y resiliencia. Por eso hemos elaborado la Guía de recursos de inmigración de AP-OD, una recopilación completa de recursos confiables y fáciles de encontrar para las familias y los proveedores que las apoyan.

Que incluye

La guía reúne recursos verificados en siete áreas clave:

    • Conozca sus derechos: información clara sobre sus derechos en el hogar, en el trabajo, en la escuela y al interactuar con las autoridades.
    • Redes de respuesta rápida: redes locales y estatales a las que puede llamar si necesita ayuda inmediata.
    • Asistencia legal: organizaciones legales de confianza y directorios para ayudarle a evitar estafas y encontrar apoyo real.
    • Detención y deportación: orientación y herramientas para mantenerse en contacto con la familia durante momentos difíciles.
    • Salud mental: recursos para apoyar el bienestar emocional tanto de niños como de adultos, incluida la atención adaptada a las necesidades culturales.
    • Educación: información sobre el derecho de los niños a aprender y prosperar en la escuela, sin importar el estatus migratorio de su familia.
    • Kits de preparación familiar: herramientas prácticas y paso a paso para ayudar a las familias a crear un plan de seguridad con anticipación.

Creating new beginnings through family and community

In this facilitator spotlight, we highlight the journey of Vianka Villagomez, an AP-OD facilitator at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles. Vianka first joined AP-OD as a parent seeking to build a stronger educational foundation for her four children. What she discovered was more than parenting support, it was a deeper understanding of the power parents have to shape their children’s futures. Through AP-OD, she gained research-based tools, practical strategies, and confidence in her role as her children’s first and most important teacher.

Today, Vianka facilitates the AP-OD curriculum at Homeboy Industries, where she supports other parents on their own journeys. She creates a welcoming space for learning, reflection, and connection, helping families turn knowledge into action. Her story reflects the heart of AP-OD. When parents are empowered, they not only transform their own families, they also help open doors for others.

Creando nuevos comienzos a través de la familia y la comunidad

En este destacado de facilitador, compartimos la trayectoria de Vianka Villagomez, facilitadora de AP-OD en Homeboy Industries en Los Ángeles. Vianka se unió inicialmente a AP-OD como madre en busca de fortalecer la base educativa de sus cuatro hijos.
