Many parents can relate to school mornings that feel like a daily marathon, balancing breakfast, school bags, and the mystery of the missing shoe. With your mind racing and thinking about a hundred other things besides getting out the door, it can feel overwhelming. But with a few small changes, mornings can flow more easily and become less stressful.
At a recent meeting of AP-OD’s Parent and Caregiver Co-creation Advisory Group, members shared their tried-and-true strategies for starting the day with less chaos and more calm.
Here are some of their top tips:
1. Prep What You Can the Night Before
Many parents find that their mornings run smoother when they prepare as much as possible the night before — for both their kids and themselves.
That can mean:
- Laying out clothes for everyone
- Packing school bags and lunches
- Setting out breakfast items
The payoff? A calmer start and extra time in the morning.
2. Get As Much Rest as You Can and Try to Wake Up Early
A smooth morning often starts with a good night’s sleep. Families recommend:
- Setting a consistent bedtime for both kids and adults
- Waking up with more than enough time to avoid rushing
3. Start the Day with Positivity
Some parents like to set the tone with music, singing, or simply a cheerful attitude. A good mood can be contagious, helping everyone feel more cooperative and energized.
4. Give Kids a Heads-Up About the Day
Whether it’s a special activity at school or after-school plans, letting children know what to expect can help them feel more prepared and avoid last-minute stress.
A Morning That Works for You and Your Family
Every family is different, and your mornings might look different than others. The key is finding a routine that fits your day, your energy, and your children’s needs. Try combining one or two of these ideas and see how they impact your mornings. Small changes can make a big difference over time.
