Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors Releases Spanish-language Video to Support Immigrant Parents

We are pleased to announce the release of a video we produced in response to the requests from thousands of parents who find themselves and their children in an environment that is increasingly uncertain for immigrants.

The video demonstrates and provides insight for parents on how to communicate with their young children on topics that are particularly difficult to tackle. It models interactions between parent and child and shows them how to respond, and comfort a child who faces the stress of bullying, and potential family separation. Using the familiar dicho “Better safe than sorry”(“Mas vale prevenir que lamentar”), it also encourages parents to develop a plan that is best for their family and how to provide for the care and well-being of their child in the event of an emergency.

Intangible Productions and Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors developed the video in conjunction with experts on family engagement, early childhood development and immigration policy. The video is available free of charge along with links to information and resources for immigrant parents. There are versions with subtitles in English and Spanish for bilingual and hearing impaired families.

This Budget Reconciliation Bill Is Cruel—and It Targets Immigrant Families

This piece was written by a policy advocate at AP-OD (Abriendo Puertas-Opening Doors)

The federal budget reconciliation bill currently making its way through Congress is anything but “beautiful.” It is a cruel, misguided, and immoral attempt at punishing, by all and any means possible, immigrants of all stripes. Whether you’re an undocumented immigrant, a refugee with temporary protection, an asylum seeker, a victim of domestic violence, a legal permanent resident, or even a U.S. citizen born to any of the above, the proposed bill would impact you.

Healthcare on the Chopping Block

The cruelty of this bill is very real. For example, people who have been granted authorization to live in the United States but are not legal permanent residents would be barred from critical healthcare services through Medicare or even the Affordable Care Act marketplace. This means that your 65-year-old mother fighting cancer would lose her Medicare coverage - even though she has lived, worked, and paid taxes into the Medicare program her entire adult life. 

This also means that young people brought here as children who have received DACA protections would be unable to buy health insurance through the ACA marketplace. DACA recipients fighting chronic illness would lose their coverage, almost overnight.

The reconciliation bill also proposes a cut to Medicaid expansion funding by 10 percent for states that use their OWN money to cover low-income, undocumented immigrants. Again, people who are working, paying taxes, and contributing to our economy would lose healthcare coverage in their home state, almost overnight. The 14 states that currently have some sort of health care coverage for undocumented immigrants can either end those programs or face drastic Medicaid funding cuts that would ultimately impact not only undocumented people in those states but the entire Medicaid population. Congress is further attempting to divide working people, using immigrants as the scapegoats. 

Targeting Children and Working Families

Other areas of deep concern are changes to the widely popular and supported child tax credit. The reconciliation bill would bar U.S. citizen children with social security numbers from accessing the credit if their working parents use a taxpayer identification number (ITIN) to file their taxes. This change would kick more than 2 million children off this widely well-regarded program. 

Misplaced Priorities

This bill is currently in the Senate and action is expected soon and while the White House has attempted to sell it as a fiscally conservative budget, the truth is that this bill would add more than $2 trillion dollars to the national debt, give large corporations and the wealthiest people in the world massive tax cuts, all on the backs of working people and using immigrants as a scapegoats.

At the onset of the Trump administration, AP-OD, in collaboration with BSP Research and  UnidosUS, conducted a national poll of nearly 1,400 Latino families with young children. Overwhelmingly, respondents stated that the top 12 concerns they hoped Congress and President Trump would address include: improving wages and income, addressing the high cost of living, creating affordable housing, lowering health care costs, protecting immigrant rights, and addressing gun violence, among others. Latino families overwhelmingly oppose the drastic and punishing funding cuts proposed in the federal budget reconciliation bill.

We Can Still Stop This

We know the U.S. House of Representatives has already failed us by passing this draconian proposal. In the days ahead, the Senate has the opportunity to do the right thing. This isn’t about budgets—it’s about values. And right now, immigrant families are being told they don’t matter.

Let’s be clear: This bill doesn’t reflect fiscal responsibility—it reflects political cruelty. It prioritizes tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy while stripping healthcare and economic support from those who need it most.

But it's not too late.

You can Take Action Today by contacting your members of the U.S. Senate here. Contact their offices and ask them to uplift our families instead of punishing and demonizing us.

            Al cerrar el 2024, queremos celebrar los increíbles logros del Grupo Asesor Nacional de Co-creación de Padres y Cuidadores de Abriendo Puertas-Opening Doors (AP-OD). Ahora en su segundo año, tuvimos la oportunidad de colaborar con padres y cuidadores de California, Nuevo México y Massachusetts que han participado en programas locales de AP-OD. Este grupo dinámico continúa demostrando el poder de la sabiduría colectiva para dar forma a iniciativas nacionales que apoyan a los padres y cuidadores de niños desde la etapa prenatal hasta los cinco años.

            Logros del 2024

            La dedicación y los conocimientos del Grupo Asesor fueron fundamentales para impulsar la misión de AP-OD. Estos son algunos aspectos destacados de sus contribuciones este año:

            Estrategia de redes sociales

            Los miembros colaboraron con la Gerente de Marketing Estratégico de AP-OD para refinar y mejorar la presencia de la organización en las redes sociales. Sus aportes garantizaron que nuestro contenido siga siendo relevante para las familias y aborde sus necesidades particulares.

            Campaña del Mes de Concientización sobre la Salud Mental

            El grupo desempeñó un papel fundamental en la planificación de la Campaña del Mes de Concientización sobre la Salud Mental. Esta iniciativa incluyó blogs, recursos seleccionados, publicaciones en las redes sociales y un seminario web de cierre, “Cómo cultivar la salud emocional en padres e hijos”. Sus contribuciones aumentaron la conciencia y brindaron herramientas valiosas para las familias de todo el país.

            Representación en la Reunión Nacional de UPLAN 2024

            Algunos miembros del Grupo Asesor representaron con orgullo a AP-OD en la Reunión Nacional de United Parent Leaders Action Network (UPLAN) 2024. Su presencia destacó la importancia del liderazgo de los padres en la formulación de políticas y programas que afectan a las familias.

            Apoyo durante el desarrollo de la nueva aplicación de AP-OD

            Como parte de su compromiso con la innovación, el grupo brindó comentarios valiosos y participó en la prueba de la nueva aplicación de AP-OD durante su desarrollo. Sus conocimientos garantizaron la usabilidad y la relevancia de la aplicación para los padres y cuidadores.

            Dieron forma a la serie de blogs para padres

            Los miembros asesores aportaron información sobre los temas de la serie de blogs para padres, que reflejan las experiencias y prioridades de la vida real de las familias. Esta información enriqueció el contenido de los blogs, haciéndolos más significativos e impactantes.

            Taller de manejo del estrés

            Al reconocer los desafíos que enfrentan los padres, el grupo participó en un taller centrado en el manejo del estrés. Aprendieron sobre los impactos físicos y mentales del estrés y las estrategias prácticas para reducir y manejar los niveles de estrés, herramientas que pueden aplicar en sus vidas y comunidades.

            As we close out 2024, we want to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the Abriendo Puertas-Opening Doors (AP-OD) National Parent/Caregiver Co-creation Advisory Group. Now in its second year, we had the opportunity to collaborate with parents and caregivers from California, New Mexico, and Massachusetts who have all participated in local AP-OD programs.This dynamic group continues to demonstrate the power of collective wisdom in shaping national initiatives that support parents and caregivers of children ages prenatal to five.

            Highlights from 2024

            The Advisory Group’s dedication and insights were instrumental in advancing AP-OD’s mission. Here are some key highlights of their contributions this year:

            Social Media Strategy

            Members collaborated with AP-OD’s Strategic Marketing Manager to refine and enhance the organization’s social media presence. Their input ensured that our content continues to resonate with families and address their unique needs.

            Mental Health Awareness Month Campaign

            The group played an integral role in planning the Mental Health Awareness Month Campaign. This initiative included blogs, curated resources, social media posts, and a closing webinar, “Cultivating Emotional Health in Parents and Children.” Their contributions elevated awareness and provided valuable tools for families across the nation.

            Representation at the UPLAN 2024 National Gathering

            Advisory Group members proudly represented AP-OD at the United Parent Leaders Action Network (UPLAN) 2024 National Gathering. Their presence highlighted the importance of parent leadership in shaping policies and programs that affect families.

            Feedback on the AP-OD App

            As part of their commitment to innovation, the group provided valuable feedback and participated in testing the new AP-OD app during its development. Their insights ensured the app’s usability and relevance for parents and caregivers.

            Shaping the Parent Blog Series

            Advisory members contributed input on topics for the Parent Blog series, reflecting the real-life experiences and priorities of families. This input enriched the blog content, making it more meaningful and impactful.

            Stress Management Workshop

            Recognizing the challenges parents face, the group participated in a workshop focused on stress management. They learned about the physical and mental impacts of stress and practical strategies for reducing and managing stress levels—tools they can carry forward into their lives and communities.

            Our Heartfelt Appreciation as we Build Momentum for 2025

            We are inspired by the passion and dedication of our National Parent/Caregiver Co-creation Advisory Group and to each member we extend our deepest gratitude. Their contributions have strengthened AP-OD’s national work and enriched the lives of countless families.             As parents and caregivers, we’re often juggling countless responsibilities—work, family, and everything in between. But what about taking care of ourselves? Self-care isn’t just a luxury; it's necessary for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as a multifaceted practice that impacts every part of our lives—from personal hygiene and nutrition to exercise, mental health, and even our living conditions. Yet, many parents often view self-care as selfish or indulgent. In reality, it’s the foundation for a healthier, more balanced life—not just for ourselves, but also for our families.

            Common Barriers to Self-care for Parents

            Despite knowing the importance of self-care, many parents struggle to prioritize it. Life’s demands often take center stage, and caring for ourselves slips to the bottom of the list. But what exactly stands in the way of practicing self-care? Let’s explore some common barriers that prevent parents from making time for their own well-being.

            •  Lack of Motivation
            •  Feeling Guilty About Spending Time or Money on Caring for ourselves
            • A Lack of Awareness of Our Own Needs
            • Thinking Self-care is a Sign of Weakness or a Vanity Measure
            • Putting the Needs of Others First

            Actionable Steps to Start Making Self-Care a Priority

            In order to overcome barriers to self-care, we need to deeply believe we deserve to be healthy for ourselves and our families and make self-care a priority in our lives.  Here are some steps to help you get started:

            IDENTIFY YOUR BARRIERS To begin, pinpoint the specific barriers preventing you from practicing self-care. Identify what consistently stops you from prioritizing your well-being, whether it's time constraints, guilt, or other factors.

            SET REALISTIC GOALS Start small by setting achievable self-care goals that fit your current lifestyle. As you make progress, you can gradually expand these goals over time to develop a more in-depth self-care routine.

            SET UP A SELF-CARE PLAN Organize a practical plan that outlines specific self-care activities. Then, make a commitment by scheduling time in your daily or weekly routine to focus on yourself and your well-being.

            GET SUPPORT Share your self-care goals with trusted friends and family members. When necessary, don't hesitate to ask for help or delegate tasks to free up more time for yourself.

            SET BOUNDARIES Establish clear boundaries to protect your 'me' time and ensure it's non-negotiable. Communicate these boundaries with your family and advocate for your self-care needs.

            MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME Review how you currently manage your time to find small pockets of time to focus on self-care. Use tools like calendars, planners, or to-do lists to help you organize and maximize your time effectively.

            LET GO OF GUILT Release any guilt you may feel about prioritizing your own well-being. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish—it benefits both you and those around you.

            SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP

            If you've been struggling with persistent barriers to self-care or are dealing with mental health challenges, it may be time to seek professional help. Whether you're facing stress, anxiety, or deeper emotional struggles, reaching out to a professional can provide the support and guidance you need.
