Tax Season is upon us, and we are here to support families file their taxes and receive the benefits they deserve. This past year especially, families are eligible for certain tax benefits both at the state and federal level. For example, if you haven’t received the full amount of the Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit, you can receive the remaining amounts by filing your taxes. That’s why we’ve partnered with United Way Worldwide and their MyFreeTaxes.com platform.

MyFreeTaxes

MyFreeTaxes.com from United Way helps taxpayers easily and accurately file their taxes from their computer or smartphone. It is a free and easy way to file federal and state tax returns at no cost. The platform screens users for credit and deduction eligibility such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit to ensure filers receive their maximum tax refund, and lets filers check for any missed stimulus payments.

MyFreeTaxes also offers help from a real person trained by the IRS via the MyFreeTaxes’ Helpline. Plus, you also have the option to schedule in-person help.

More about the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit

The Child Tax Credit increased from $2,000 to either $3,000 or $3,600, depending on the child’s age and the income of their parents or guardians. Most families got half of what the IRS estimated would be their Child Tax Credit in advanced monthly payments from July to December 2021. However, some families may not have received the full amount. File your taxes through MyFreeTaxes and they will screen if you are eligible to receive the missing Credit amounts.

Another tax benefit that was guaranteed and expanded for working families this year was the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a tax break for low-income workers, and this year, it can be worth up to $1,500 for some workers without qualifying kids at home. If you are eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit, it will lower the amount of federal income taxes you are required to pay.

To get these remaining credits, families must file their taxes, which is why free tax preparation is a necessity.
